Las Gemelas
Two blue falls side by side, one milky and one electric
Las Gemelas, the twins, are two waterfalls that fall almost next to each other: one fed by the Quebrada Gata, the other by the Quebrada Gatita. One is milky sky-blue, the other clear electric blue in a fern-covered gorge.
The long way in starts on a gravel road near the Río Agrio entrance. It crosses open pasture, enters the forest above the river and ends with a steep, slippery slide down the last 100 metres. A bit downstream there is a calmer pool for a very cold swim.
The same falls can also be reached on the shorter trails of Blue Falls of Costa Rica.
Getting there
Drive to Bajos del Toro (easiest via Vara Blanca) and continue past Tesoro Escondido and the Río Agrio entrance. About five minutes later a gravel road turns off through the pastures; park at the roadside.
Local tips
Wear trail shoes with deep grip, a waterproof jacket and bring a dry bag. Expect to get muddy.
Travel lightly
The water is close to freezing: keep swims short and never go in after heavy rain.
