Blue Falls of Costa Rica
Baby-blue pools and cascades coloured by the volcano
Just up the road from Catarata del Toro, a set of short trails links several cascades and pools of an almost unreal baby-blue colour. The water picks up its colour from volcanic minerals on the slopes of Poás.
It is the busiest spot in the valley, so go early. Some of the pools are swimmable, though the water is cold.
Getting there
About 6 km north of Bajos del Toro village on Route 708, next to Catarata del Toro. Follow the signs to the Blue Falls parking area.
Local tips
Arrive at opening time to have the pools quieter. Bring a dry bag for your phone.
Travel lightly
No soap or sunscreen in the pools: the colour depends on clean water.
