Catarata Río Perla
A nameless double fall up a crystal-clear jungle river
Near La Alegría de Siquirres, the Río Perla runs crystal clear through tropical forest. From the road bridge, the trail soon disappears and you pick your own way upstream over slippery rocks, past pools that beg for a swim.
The reward is a waterfall with no official name: two streams of mild-temperature water pouring over a giant boulder, plus a smaller fall from a side creek.
Getting there
Take Route 32 towards Limón. At Siquirres turn right towards La Alegría and continue about 30 minutes to the bridge over the Río Perla. Park at the roadside.
Local tips
Go with a local guide: there is no marked trail. Pack lunch and a dry bag.
Travel lightly
Watch the water level and colour. If it rises or turns brown, head back at once: flash floods are a real risk.
