Catarata Las Gemelas
Twin falls and a hidden cave in the hills of Puriscal
In the forested hills around Mastatal, in Puriscal, a small reserve protects two pairs of twin waterfalls. The first pair drops about 50 metres into a pool you can stand under, with a small cave hidden behind the water.
About 100 metres upstream is a second, even bigger pair. The best swimming pool is 200 metres downstream, with large rocks for resting.
Getting there
Drive through Puriscal towards La Cangreja National Park, turn left at the signs for Mastatal and continue to Villa Mastatal. The walk starts on a gravel road from there.
Local tips
It is hot and humid: carry at least two bottles of water. Lunch and a shower at Villa Mastatal make a good finish.
Travel lightly
Check the pool for rocks and logs before jumping.
